What is an RAD exam?

Every year I year I have students and parents asking me what I am talking about when I talk about RAD ballet exams. It's a completely reasonable question as for a lot parents and students the idea of an exam might cause some stress. Let me explain....

First, the students that I teach are only offered to do the exam if we feel that they are ready. This is not to be exclusionary or meant to make anyone feel less than. We just want students to feel confident going into the exam and to come out having felt it was a good experience as the RAD has high expectations when it comes to exams.

What happens in the exam room?

Each grade has a set syllabus that includes multiple exercises and dances. The exercises that you learn and practice in class are the exercises you will be performing in the exam. Each grade works a little differently and there are multiple different types of exams. However, there will always be an examiner sitting at the front of the room watching you and taking notes as you perform your exercises and dances. Additionally, although you can do an exam alone, you usually go into the exam in small groups.

Finally, why do an exam? What is the purpose?

In my opinion, exams are not necessary but if students are serious about ballet and have dreams of becoming a dancer or dance teacher then I highly encourage them to do exams. First and foremost, we hope they are an enriching life experience for the dancers that choose to take them. Secondly, they give students a goal to work towards. Finally, when you receive your grade you also receive a breakdown of that grade. This way you can see where you are doing well and where you may be struggling.
